DO YOU KNOW THIS NEIGHBORHOOD?

 Do you know this neighborhood? is a question we ask when we want to find out if someone is familiar with the area around us. A neighborhood is a place where people live, close to one another. We can use this question to ask for help, directions, or to start a conversation. For example:

  • Do you know this neighborhood? I'm looking for a bank.

  • Do you know this neighborhood? Where is the nearest coffee shop?

This topic is useful for talking to people in cities, towns, or when traveling.


GRAMMAR:

We use the present simple tense to ask about places in the area:

  • Do you know this neighborhood?

  • Is there a restaurant near here?

  • Where is the hospital?

We also use prepositions of place:

  • on (on the corner, on Main Street)

  • next to (next to the bank)

  • across from (across from the park)

Examples:

  • It’s on the left.

  • The school is next to the library.

SENTENCES:

Positive:

  • I know this neighborhood.

  • There is a supermarket on this street.

  • The school is across from the bank.

Negative:

  • I don’t know this place.

  • There isn’t a gas station nearby.

  • The museum is not open today.

Questions:

  • Do you know this neighborhood?

  • Is there a bakery near here?

  • Where is the nearest bus stop?

Answers:

  • Yes, I know it very well.

  • No, I don’t know this area.

  • It’s on Park Street, next to the hotel.


CONVERSATION:

Carlos: I’m looking for a pharmacy.

Anna: Oh, the pharmacy is on Pine Street. Go straight and turn right.

READING:

Maria is new in the city. She wants to buy food. She walks down the street and sees a small shop. She goes inside and buys some fruit. After that, she looks for a post office. She asks a man, “Do you know this neighborhood?” The man says, “Yes, I do. The post office is across from the park.” Maria thanks him and walks to the park. She sees the post office and sends a letter to her family.

Questions:

    • She wants to buy food.
