GO ONE BLOCK. THEN TURN LEFT...

This topic teaches how to give and understand basic directions in English. It is useful when you are helping someone find a place or asking how to get somewhere.

Examples:

  • Go one block. Then turn left.

  • Walk past the bank, then turn right.

  • Go straight for two blocks. The store is on your right.

GRAMMAR
We use the imperative form to give directions. The imperative form uses the base form of the verb.

Examples:

  • Go straight.

  • Turn left.

  • Stop at the corner.

The subject (you) is understood, so we don’t say it.

VOCABULARY

  1. Block – A section of a street between two intersections.

  2. Turn – To change direction.

  3. Corner – The place where two streets meet.

  4. Straight – Without turning, in one direction.

  5. Intersection – The point where two or more roads meet.

  6. Left – The direction to the left side.

  7. Right – The direction to the right side.

  8. Past – To go by something.

  9. Across from – On the other side of the street.

  10. Next to – Beside or close to.

Positive:
